Introduction
In some cases it is not possible or desirable to make a key for a vehicle using diagnostic tools. This may be due to the configuration of the vehicles ECU network, due to a faulty ECU network or sub components. It could also be that there is simply not a diagnostic programming procedure for learning keys at all.
The skills you will learn in this course will provide you with the confidence to be able to read, modify, and write to simple EEPROM devices. There is no soldering involved, no complicated MCU's to deal with. The devices we will be dealing with in this course are all able to be done in-circuit without modification.
Course Specifics
- The course will take approximately 3 - 4 hours to complete.
- Contains fully narrated content including a rich mix of demonstration videos and animations.
- A series of assessments have been included so that participants can track their progress and understanding of the subject.
- Online bulletin board allows for exchanges between participants and between participants and administrators.
- Takeaway/downloadable support material is available to each participant upon completion. This includes multiple guides on manual key making methods for some specific applications.
What is required
This course is designed to be as self contained as possible. However a few items are recommended several of which can be purchased separately to the training if needed.
EEPROM PROGRAMMER
In order to read EEPROM devices, a programing tool is required. During the training the programmer Orange 5 will be demonstrated, however the fundamental skills learnt should be easily transferrable to other programming tools if desired.
TechEd EEPROM Training board
This training PCB has been custom designed to provide the trainee with a assortment of common EEPROM types. This includes various interfaces and types that are commonplace in automotive immobiliser applications. It will come pre loaded with several data files which will be used during the training exercises as well as real world immobiliser files.
EEPROM CLIPS and HARNESSES
The main focus of this course is to read EEPROM devices while they are still "in-circuit". To achieve this a set of Specific EEPROM clips and a wire extension harness are required.
EEPROM Cleaning Equipment
A important section of the training discusses the need to clean the EEPROM. This ensures a good electrical connection when substances such as conformal coating have been applied. Recommended items for this can include a sharp pick or probe type tool, or if desired acetone and cotton tips. LSC do not sell these items, so best to acquire from your local hardware store.
TRANSPONDER TOOL
The objective is to directly make a working transponder from the data contained within the EEPROM memory device. To achieve this a transponder tool is normally required to decrypt and work with the data.
While in reality most EEPROM key making applications will certainly require a transponder tool, it is not always the case, in some specific applications it is possible to manually write transponders yourself.
While having a transponder tool available during this training is certainly helpful, it is not required. There will be demonstration exercises showing the method of programming transponders using both a transponder tool and some specific manual methods.
