Australia's Best Young Locksmith 2022 | 3rd Finalist

Aiden webb, matrix security (tas)

Please provide a short personal biography about yourself.

My name is Aiden Webb and I am 29 years old and live in the country town of Ridgley in Tasmania with my partner and our beautiful baby girl. My interests are Football and Hockey. I have been working in the locksmith industry since 2009 when I began vocational training with Total Lock & Alarms whilst completing years 11 & 12 at College. This vocational training gave me the desire to continue in the field of locksmithing and made me realise how important the work I do in this job is to customers both businesses & everyday people.

After completing year 12, Total Lock & Alarms offered me labouring work which eventually turned into an offer to complete an apprenticeship with them which I was honoured to accept. I completed my apprenticeship in 2014 & have been working as a qualified locksmith ever since.

In 2019 I was approached by Matrix Security Integration to lead the setting up of their new branch on the North West Coast. This was an exciting opportunity one that I did not hesitate to accept and have been an integral part of the success of this branch.

What are some of the skills and abilities necessary for someone to succeed as a locksmith?

To be successful as a locksmith you need to be an excellent communicator who can tailor your conversation to your audience. They need to be highly adaptable and be able to think critically, solve problems and have the physical and technical skills to make keys, open locks, and assist with customer issues.

Locksmiths require patience and good emotional intelligence because they often deal with stressed and/or frustrated customers. They need to be self-motivated, punctual, and ready to respond to requests quickly. Locksmiths require the ability to work autonomously and in a variety of settings and environments, for example in a busy street or confined spaces.

What key issues do you think will affect the locksmith industry in the coming decade and how do you think these should be approached?

The key issues that will affect the locksmith industry in the coming decade will be:

Ongoing advancements and changes in technology; newer electronic locks for vehicles, residences & commercial buildings, improvements to “Smart Locks”, Keyless Entry systems & Card access systems shrinkage in the job market due to locksmiths struggling with new technology putting greater stress on existing locksmiths.

There will be an ongoing need to keep up to date with technology improvements to ensure that locksmiths have the ability to install & educate their customers on how to use the equipment. Block release training will need to be modified to include the new technology & additional training courses created for qualified locksmiths to undertake either on campus &/or online.

Tell us why you should be Australia’s best young locksmith.

It would be an honour to be named Australia’s best young locksmith, a profession that I have been working passionately in for over a decade.

I have excellent interpersonal skills; I am approachable, reliable & trustworthy & have the natural ability to interact with people from all walks of life & always willing to assist.
