ADI was established in 1975 by locksmiths who recognised a gap in the market for a specialised lockable bolt. Driven by the need for better solutions, they set out to create a clever product that would better serve the Australian Locksmithing industry.

From the beginning, ADI has continued to build on this vision, listening closely to feedback from Australian industry leaders and developing products that address real-world needs. This commitment to innovation continues to enable ADI to provide unique, high-quality locking solutions that stand the test of time. After 50 years, the company’ s focus to deliver products that are not only cost-effective and smart, but also visually appealing and practical for locksmiths remains.

The story of ADI’ s flagship product, the ‘ lockable bolt, ’ began in 1975 when Peter and Brian Preddey invented and started producing it at Preddey’ s Locksmiths in Miranda, Sydney. This groundbreaking product was born out of necessity, as nothing like it existed at the time and locksmiths needed a better solution.

Following that, in 1978 Brian launched ADI Mobile Locksmiths; with the acronym “ ADI” standing for “ Automotive, Domestic, Industrial.” Later that year, the Preddey Bolt was rebranded as the ADI Bolt, marking a significant milestone for the company. 
With increasing demand, production moved to Gerringong in 1982, where it remained until 2015, before settling in Brooklyn, Victoria, where it operates to this day.

In 2025, ADI still produces a large range of instantly recognisable, ever-popular products, such as the 5004 Lockable Bolt, SL5 Slimline Lock Bolt, and 444 Block Locks. It’ s remarkable to think that ADI has been crafting high-quality, Australian-made products since 1975.

Throughout the years, the ADI range has evolved with cosmetic updates and changes in materials, but its core identity as a robust, lockable bolt has never changed.
