The 1980s| a decade of change

The 1980s were a decade of transformation for Australia and the security industry. Economic growth, corporate acquisitions, and significant market changes reshaped the way many businesses operated.

For decades, LSC had operated as both a locksmith supplier and a general hardware wholesaler. However, as large hardware chains and buying groups began to dominate the market, the traditional wholesale hardware sector started to disappear. Recognising where the future lay, LSC made the strategic decision to focus entirely on locksmithing and security products, this was an important step that helped shape the business we know today.

Competition within the locksmithing market was also intensifying. Key blank manufacturers such as Dominion Lock and Edmonds held strong positions across Australia, prompting LSC to strengthen its commitment to Italian manufacturer Silca. Throughout the decade, Silca’s premium quality, innovation and product range became central to LSC’s growth strategy.

One challenge remained: how to communicate with locksmiths across the country. At the time, there was no dedicated locksmithing publication and few opportunities to regularly connect with the industry.
That changed in September 1983 when LSC launched its monthly customer newsletter. Created to share industry news, product updates and technical information, the publication quickly became an important industry resource. More than four decades and over 500 issues later, the newsletter remains a testament to LSC’s commitment to keeping the industry informed, connected and up to date with the latest products, technologies and developments.

The 1980s also saw the rise of restricted key systems, with the introduction of the MLAA’s J Series keyway. Designed by renowned locksmith, engineer and inventor John Andrew, the system provided locksmiths with an important restricted profile solution at a time when demand for key control was rapidly increasing.

Meanwhile, major international acquisitions were reshaping the industry. Global manufacturer Ilco acquired several key competitors, including Dominion Lock and later Clavis Industries (Edmonds Keys) in Australia. These moves brought increased competition and further reinforced LSC’s commitment to partnering with leading global manufacturers while continuing to support the local locksmith industry.

By the end of the decade, LSC had emerged with a clearer focus, a stronger market position, and a growing national presence. The foundations laid during the 1980s would help shape the next chapter of the company’s history.
